Sergio Aguero and Lautaro Martinez have sent Argentina in the quarterfinals of 2019 Copa America as both players scored to guide Argentina win 2-0 against Qatar in Group-B contest. Sunday’s night was crucial for Argentina as if they didn’t beat Qatar, they’ll be out from the tournament before heading into knockouts.
Argentina got the chance early in the match that helped players to make themselves calm. Qatar’s defender did a mistake in the 4th minute and it helped Argentina to take advantage as Qatari defenders passed the ball to Martinez just near to penalty area and Inter Milan striker didn’t make any mistake and provided much needed lead to the national side.
After the match, Martinez admitted that scoring first goal in the early minutes of game, made players comfort and calm in the pressure match like this and team is gearing up now for the quarterfinal clash and further stage of the tournament.
“When we scored the first goal we just needed to keep our calm until the end and we were qualified. We were playing a good team, we couldn’t make a mess of it. Now we need to stay focused and win the next game and keep progressing,” Martinez said after the match.
The first half of the match ended with Argentina leading 1-0. However this could be 2-0 but Aguero couldn’t score. Qatari players were trying hard to get into Argentina pool but no space was provided by the finalists of 2016 runner-ups. Sergio Aguero didn’t create any mistake in the 2nd half and he scored the match winning goal in the 82nd minute.
“We played a good game and we won, and that was what mattered. We needed a game like this to gain some confidence and calm. As we play more games the team grows each one and that game was good for that,” Messi said.
Argentina will now play Venezuela in the quarter-final match of Copa America on 28 June in Rio de Janeiro.
