ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 favorites India have defeated South Africa in their opening match of championship by 7 wickets. Winning the toss, South African captain Faf Du Plessis chose to bat first and team managed to put 227 runs on the scoreboard in 50 overs for the loss of 9 wickets. India chased down this total comfortably with an excellent century from Rohit Sharma.

South Africa didn’t get good start as Jasprit Bumrah dismissed both openers when team’s total was 24. After that skipper Du Plessis and Dussen tried to pull out things and built 54 runs partnership. Unfortunately both batsmen were dismissed in the 19th over by Yuzvender Chahal and it made Proteas score 80/4 in 20 overs.

Chris Morris, Phehlukwayo and Rabada played some good shots at the the end of innings that helped South Africa to post 227 runs total on this difficult pitch. Chahal took four wickets by spending just 51 runs in 10 overs. Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar took 2-2 wickets each.

Indian openers Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan started the innings with slow and steady but Dhawan couldn’t survive and Kagiso Rabada dismissed him. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were looking good but Phehlukwayo removed Kohli with a brilliant ball and he was caught behind. Rohit Sharma was solid at one end and scoring runs.

Rohit Sharma made 122 runs and confirmed team India’s victory in this first game of 2019 world cup. MS Dhoni made 34 runs to make sure team didn’t lose any more wicket. Hardik Pandya also scored firing 15 runs in just 7 balls. Rohit was awarded man of the match for his 23rd ODI hundred and match winning innings.

Southampton hosted this India vs South Africa contest in which Proteas came with two defeats against England and Bangladesh. And with this defeat against India, South Africa have lost three successive matches which is first time in their history of world cup. Now it will be difficult for Africa to make it to semi-finals.
