“If we compare with men, women’s ranking and record is much better. If India plays in the world cup, I think women’s team will participate much ahead of men,” Bhutia told reporters.

There are several young Indian footballers play in domestic leagues like I-league and Indian Super League (ISL), but still they need a lot of skill and experience together as a unit to perform at the international level. Bhaichung wants to see more promotion in the women’s football as well to boost young girls in the nation.

“Definitely women football in India is growing though more promotion is needed. Not just in football, in other sports as well, women should be getting more promotion and encouragement. For men, there are academies and I-League and ISL teams but when we talk about women, there is no academy.”

FIFA under-17 women’s world cup will be played in February 2021 which was originally scheduled to be held in 2020 in India. But due to COVID-19 outbreak, it was postponed.

Bhutia believes that hosting such kind of world class tournament will inspire the women to attract more towards the game.

“It will be a great motivation for the girls and women football overall,” he quoted.

Indian people love cricket more than any other sport but the recent data showed that young generation under 16 are watching football more than cricket.

“As per data, youths under-16 are watching more football than cricket. This is a good sign for football.”

Bhaichung runs football school all over India to train young fellows. There are more than 5000 kids everyday gets training in Bhaichung Bhutia Football School across the nation.
