The next edition of ICC ODI Cricket World Cup has been scheduled to be played in India and it is the 13th world cup tournament. This is the first occasion India will host competition alone while previous three times, country shared hosting rights with neighboring nations.
England and Wales hosted the cricket world cup most of the times to five occasions and eventually last tournament they hosted in 2019 which they won as well. With India hosting 2023 world cup, let’s have a look at the venues and stadiums that can host International Cricket Council’s showpiece event.
Expected venues for 2023 cricket world cup
1. Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
Iconic Wankhede Stadium hosted 2011 world cup final and it will be prominent choice to host most of the key matches of 2023 tournament. The stadium has capacity of having more than 33000 spectators to enjoy the game seating in the stadium.
2. Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Kolkata’s Eden Gardens is one of the most popular cricket grounds in the country with capacity of 68000. Eden Gardens hosted the final of 2016 t20 world cup and in 1987, it became second ground to host a ICC cricket world cup final. It will be one of the favorites to host the final of 2023 world cup.
3. Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi
Arun Jaitley Stadium formerly known as Feroz Shah Kotla stadium is situated at the capital of India and it has capacity of hosting fans at near about 42000. The stadium hosted 2016 twenty20 world cup semi-final and we can hope to see it hosting some key games of 13th ODI world cup.
4. Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur
Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh stadium could be one of the venues to host 2023 world cup matches. The pink city stadium has 30000 capacity and it was used in 1987 and 1996 world cup tournaments. But no world cup game was played during 2011 event on this ground.
5. M. Chinnaswami Stadium, Bengaluru
Bangalore’s M. Chinnaswami stadium hosted five world cup matches in 2011 meanwhile 1996 world cup’s quarterfinal match between India and Pakistan was played on this venue. The stadium was used during 1987 world cup as well. Hence we can see some good matches on this M. Chinnaswami venue with 40000 capacity during 2023 world cup.
6. MA Chidambaram, Chennai
Chepauk stadium has 50000 capacity to host cricket fans and it hosted 1987, 1996 and 2011 ICC world cup matches. It would be an ideal choice to go with the venue once again for 2023 edition.
7. Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
Narendra Modi stadium formerly known as Motera Stadium is one of the most high profile cricket grounds in the country situated at Ahmedabad. This stadium would be front choice to host 2023 world cup final as after renovation, the capacity of stadium has become 1,32,000 which is the highest across cricket stadiums all over the world. It hosted previous three world cup matches held in India.
8. PCA Stadium, Mohali
Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium has 26000 capacity and it hosted notable world cup semi-final matches in 1987 and 2011. India vs Pakistan 2011 world cup semifinal clash one of the highlights of the venue for hosting top class games. West India and Australia 1987 world cup semifinal was also thrilling one at this stadium.
9. Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad
Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is one of the top venues for hosting 2023 world cup and it has 55,000 capacity. The stadium hasn’t hosted any world cup match till date but it has organized 2017 and 2019 IPL finals. So we can expect some top matches for this venue to host in 13th ICC world cup.
10. VCA Stadium, Nagpur
Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur hosted four matches of ICC world cup 2011 and we can expect more games in the 2023 tournament with ground’s capacity 45,000.
11. MCA Stadium, Pune
Pune’s Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium has 37500 capacity to host the fans for a cricket match. The venue hasn’t hosted a world cup game but there are possibilities that it might host few games for cwc23 event.
2023 world cup will be played in October and November. Final match scheduled for 26th November.
