30 July 1930, this was the day when Uruguay national football team got the honor of becoming first ever FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football) World Cup’s champion. Uruguay beat Argentina in the final match of 1930 world cup to claim trophy. First edition of FIFA World Cup took place between 13 and 30 July across 3 venues in 1 host city of Uruguay.
Uruguay defeated Argentina in the 1930 FIFA world cup final by 4-2. Thirteen teams participated in the maiden world championship of football sport.
FIFA president Jules Rimet hand over world cup trophy to Uruguayan football federation president Dr Paul Jude after home team won the final match played at Estadio Centenario, Montevideo.
Argentina defeated United States in the first semifinal by 6-1 to reach finals meanwhile Uruguay thrashed Yugoslavia 6-1 to enter inaugural fifa world cup final game. Both teams were undefeated till the final and eventually Uruguay won all the matches of 1930 world cup.
Uruguay got the lead in the starting moments of the final as Pablo Dorado opened the tally in the 12th minute. Argentina hit back and scored level after just 8 minutes as Carlos Peucelle sent the ball into nets in 20th minute. Top goal scorer of the tournament, Guillermo Stabile scored the goal for Argentina in the 37th minute and it was his 8th goal of the world cup.
Argentine was leading with 2-1 till the end of first half of the match. Pedro Cea came from the behind and he got the equalizer for hosts in the 57th minute. Cea was the second top goal scorer with 5 goals in the competition. Santos Iriarte provided much needed 3-1 lead to Uruguay in the 68th minute meanwhile Castro’s goal in the 89th minute confirmed Uruguayan victory.
