Sri Lanka upsets 2019 world cup favorites as hosts failed to chase 232

ICC World Cup 2019 favorite and host England suffered the biggest upset of tournament as under-rated Sri Lanka have defeated them by 20 runs in a low scoring game as per modern ODI cricket standards. Sri Lanka made 232 in 50 overs and it should be easy target for strong England team to chase but they eventually failed and whole team all out for 212.

Lasith Malinga was the hero of the match for Sri Lanka as he took 4 wickets to break England’s backbone. Salinga Malinga dismissed top English batsmen Vince, Bairstow, Root and Buttler. And eventually he almost took Ben Stokes wicket in his last over of bowling spell as fielder in the deep mid-wicket dropped his catch. Malinga was awarded man of the match for his match winning bowling performance.

Sri Lanka won toss and chose to bat first and their start was too poor as they lost 2 wickets on just 3 score. After that Fernando and Mendis built small partnership to give some hope to the camp. Fernando was dismissed on 49 and Angelo Mathews came to the crease who played all important role in Sri Lankan innings as he scored 85 runs to guide team towards a challenging total of 232 for the lose of 9 wickets.

In the chase of 233 target, England lost Jonny Bairstow in the first over as Lasith Malinga caught him LBW on the very first ball he faced. After Joe Root took responsibility and played good innings of 57 runs to take his team towards target. But unfortunately he was returned to the pavilion on Malinga’s delivery. Ben Stokes was the last warrior in English innings who made unbeaten 82 and fought till the end. But couldn’t rescue his side and England lost the match by 20 runs.

England now finds themselves in a difficult situation to qualify for semi-finals as they have to win at least 2 matches in remaining their three world cup 2019 matches. And their next 3 games are against Australia, India and New Zealand and these three teams are the top teams in the tournament so far.

Interesting fact is that England are due to beat New Zealand, Australia and India in the cricket world cup for 27 years. So it will be a big task for home team.
