Sports and youth affairs Union Minister of Guwahati Sarbananda Sonowal states that upcoming 2018 SAF Games will be held in Guwahati. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has confirmed Guwahati as the official venue for South Asian Games in 2018.

Sarbananda Sonowal said, “In a recent meeting in Chennai, the IOA decided to hold the SAF games in Guwahati. There are many formalities involved in the process.

So, my ministry has asked the IOA to give a detailed proposal.”

2015 National Youth Festival is also scheduled for Guwahati to be organized between 8-12 January.

“We have decided to hold the National Youth Festival between January 8 and 12 in Guwahati. Around 5,000 delegates from all states and Union Territories will take part in the festival. Besides, leading sportspersons and representatives from various educational institutions will attend it,” he added.

Sonowal also mentioned that we are working to promote sports in the country and state. For this purpose we will be proposing HRD minister to include sports and games in educational curricula. This will help youngsters and small kids to aware of sports and let them choose their game.

“The northeast is a fertile ground for sports and sportspersons. The Centre will work to promote sporting talent in the region. At the same time, sports being a state subject, we request the state governments to come forward and improve the sporting environment of the northeast.”
