Australia beat West Indies by 9 wickets in 1st Test at Dominica

Australia beat West Indies by 9 wickets in 1st Test at Dominica.

The Australians started the tour on a positive note having rolled out the Windies for a mere 148 as the batsmen failed to even go past the team break on Day 1 of the 1st test. Devendra Bishoo had a great time in that innings as he ended with figures of 6 for 80 in 33 over’s, with 10 maidens.

Australia beat West Indies by 9 wickets in 1st Test at Dominica.

Australia however were not comfortable in their first as Bishoo reduced them to 178 for 8 before the last two wickets for Australia put on 140 runs and took the Australian lead to 170 runs with still a bit of the second day left.

West Indies got through the day with 25 runs on the board but lost Hope and Brathwaite in consecutive deliveries before the end of days play on the second dat. They were trailing by 145 runs and were badly in need of a partnership.

Bravo and Dowrich started the day brightly but Hazlewood sent Bravo back for 5 and left the WI at 31/3 already looking at a grim defeat. Samuels joined Dowrich and the pair settled the innings and took the team to lunch without any more damage at 97/3.

The pair started to express themselves and reached their half century giving their team a chance at getting something out of the match. They looked positive in every stroke and negated any danger from the Australian bowlers.

But Hazlewood picked his second of the day as Dowrich flicked one straight to the hands of short mid-wicket. He perished for a well made 70 and WI were now 181/4 with a lead of 11 runs. He was joined by Blackwood. The pair went to tea at 189/4 with Samuels looking settled.

It took 7 over’s for Australia to strike after tea as Blackwood was picked up by Lyon with a beauty. He went for 12 and Samuels followed him two balls later as Johnson pushed him back with a short ball. He was gone for 74 and the Windies were 198/6 with just 28 runs ahead.

Wickets kept falling as Ramdin dragged one back for 3. Starc picked Taylor for a duck in the next over and reduced them to 206/8. Starc picked the last two wickets in a hurry as he dismissed Bishoo for 1 and Gabriel for a naught of the first ball. West Indies were all out for 216. Australia had a target of 46 with the whole of 2 days and a bit to play.

Warner and Marsh came out for the modest chase and Warner looked like he wanted to finish it off quickly as they blasted 13 runs of the first over of Taylor. Both batsmen played some exquisite stroke and took the bowlers apart. Warner edged one to first slip for 28 of 20 balls with two sixes and 3 fours and left only 5 runs’ for victory.

Smith got the winning run and Marsh ended on 13 of 7 balls. Australia chased the target of 46 in under 5 over’s and retained the Frank Worrell trophy in less than 3 brutal days. The Windies were completely outplayed and needed to improve their game after a dismal performance.

The oldest player to record a century on a test debut, Adam Voges was given the man of the match award. He said that it was his dream to play test cricket for Australia and that the Man of the Match award was a dream come true.

The West Indies collapsed to 216 all out from 181 for 3 and need to do a lot of work on their cricketing skills if they are to have any chance of beating the mighty Australians in the rest of the series.

For Australia, after the World Cup victory, this win gives them more and more confidence on their ability and to go away from home and win in under 3 days is a great achievement. The skipper Michael Clarke was overjoyed and has every reason to. They are indeed the champions of the World at the moment.
