Gustavo Matosas appointed as Costa Rica coach

Costa Rica football federation has appointed Gustavo Matosas as the head coach of national team and he’ll take charge in from January. Former Uruguay player Matosas to guide Costa Rica team for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

“This is a great honor for me, to represent, through the medium of the national team, a country like Costa Rica. It’s a wonderful challenge that I am very excited about.

I will treat the opportunity as if it were my own country’s national team,” Matosas said in a press conference.

Ronald Gonzalez is the interim manager of Costa Rica as he replaced Oscar Ramirez after team’s poor show at 2018 world cup. Costa Rica failed to qualify to knockout stage and were knocked out from group round matches.

It would be Matosas’ first international association as coach. He has coached 14 different football clubs since he retired in 2001 after playing seven matches for Uruguay’s national side. Matosas traveled Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Paraguay and Saudi Arabia to perform his duties for various soccer clubs.
