Preview

Both Pakistan and West Indies will look at start cwc19 campaign with a victory in their first game of the competition on Friday. Pakistan who lost ODI series recently in England by 4-0 and then faced defeat in the warm-up match against Afghanistan, would probably be looking to get some winning way at the start.

Men In Green perform well in International Cricket Council tournaments and the last tournament which was ICC Champions Trophy played in 2017, Pak won it by defeating arch rivals India in the final. Pakistan was dark horse in the event and nobody was backing them to win. But the way team came from behind and won championship, skipper Sarfraz Ahmed believes that team could repeat that in world cup 2019 as well.

“We will seek inspiration from our Champions Trophy win because then also we were losing and then lifted ourselves at the right time to win the trophy. The boys are motivated and are eager to put these losses behind them and by playing in England for a month we are well prepared and you will hopefully see us doing well,” Sarfraz told AFP ahead of world cup’s first game.

Mohammed Amir is not looking fit for the first game against Windies, hence it is also the concern for captain Ahmed and coach Mickey Arthur. Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Haris Sohail and Shadab Khan are the key attributes in Pakistan bowling lineup and these will be crucial for Men In Green against dangerous batting-lineup, the Caribbean team comes up with.

On the other hand, West Indies team relies on their power hitters like Brathwaite, Gayle, Hope, Russell and Hetmyer who can turn around the game at any instance. All-rounder Carlos Brathwaite thinks that not relying on Gayle would help the team to do better and can turn around the stories.

“It would be great if we could create our own legacy. Obviously, Chris has done that in the Test and ODI format, and then is ‘Universe Boss’ in T20 as well.

The young guys like Shai Hope are aspiring to reach the heights that Chris has reached. If we can win, we can be looked upon in the way that the team of ‘75 and ‘79 was looked upon, as heroes of sorts,” Brathwaite said as per ICC.
