N Srinivasan resumed Kohli's Indian Team Captaincy.

Venkat was a member of the five-men selection panel in 2011-12.He said that Kohli would have become the Indian ODI captain as early as in 2012. He said that it was because of N Srinivasan, who was the head at the BCCI at that time, who was against him.

Venkat explained that during the Australian tour in 2011-12, the Indian team was fragmented. In a column for a tabloid in Bengal, Venkat explained that the MSD led Indian team was having problems with unity and that the players lacked any kind of team spirit.

He explained that during this tour, the five member selection committee decided to change things. They wanted to bring some young energy and freshness into the squad and felt that Kohli was the right man to bring the change. However, N Srinivasan who was ruling the BCCI at that time did not want this to happen.

Venkat went onto say that Kohli’s captaincy skills were evident in the U19 World Cup where India was victorious. He also took the North Zone to victory in the Deodhar Trophy in the 2010-11 season, and Venkat felt that everyone at that time was sure about Kohli’s captaincy skills.

Kohli has already led India in the ODI format. In July 2013, during a series against Sri Lanka, MSD was injured and Kohli got to be the captain for the Indian team for the first time. However, he has had to wait for a year more before he could lead his country. He got the chance to lead India against Australia in their tour just before the World Cup.
