Star India acquired broadcasting rights of Rio 2016 Olympics

International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded official broadcast rights of 2016 Summer Olympics to Star India for telecasting the tournament in seven South Asian countries. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Maldives are the listed countries where Star Network will be broadcasting live events of 2016 Olympics scheduled to play from 5 to 21 August in Rio.

IOC President Mr Jacques Rogge said, “We welcome the opportunity to work with STAR India for the upcoming editions of the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games.

We are confident they will do a great job providing the best possible broadcast coverage of the Games, on a variety of platforms, to the largest possible audience in the seven different countries.”

IOC Finance Commission Chairman Mr Richard Carrion said, “Traditionally the IOC has negotiated broadcast rights on a pan-Asian basis; however, the media landscape is changing and we have adapted our approach recently by negotiating directly in certain markets. We are very pleased to have reached this agreement directly with STAR India.”

Star Network has rights to display live coverage of 2016 Olympics on television, internet and mobile platforms. Star Sports is the dedicated channel of star network to broadcast sporting events.

Head of Sport Business for STAR India Mr Nitin Kukreja said, “The Olympic Games remain the pinnacle of sporting achievement where the world’s best in various disciplines face off for the title of Olympic champion. Indian athletes have also performed admirably over the last few editions, which is evident in the medal-winning performances that we have come to admire.

Rio de Janeiro in Brazil will be hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics in which it is expected that 206 nations will be taking participation.
