Afridi wants former Pakistani legends to follow Rahul Dravid to groom young cricketers

Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi has urged former cricketers to follow India’s Rahul Dravid’s path for grooming young players in the country. Dravid coached Indian under-19 and India A teams over the span and now he’s head at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

During a function at Lahore, Afridi highlighted the effect Dravid has brought Indian cricket. Recently Pakistan team toured New Zealand where they failed to show fighting sprit, forget about winning. Pakistani batsmen were clueless on the pitch and didn’t have the courage to play freely. Thus former Pakistani all-rounder wants legendary players like Mohammad Yousuf, Younus Khan, Inzamam-Ul-Haq and more to guide young talent to play fearless.

“I think as it is we are facing a shortage of quality talent so what is coming through needs to be groomed properly by our former greats. They can do a lot with these young players,” Afridi said.

Shahid emphasized that Dravid handled young Indian cricketers pretty well and allowed them to play fearless shots during his tenure between 2016 and 2019 at U19 side.

On asking Mohammed Amir’s issue with Misbah and Waqar, Afridi said that this problem is associated with Pakistani players and it’s not new.

“Even in my time bowlers had problems with the coaches. My issues with Waqar are well documented. I think this can only be prevented when the board (PCB) opens up and listens and talks to disgruntled players.

“Players need to be encouraged to be aggressive and play with a big heart, then only results will come.”
