Herath 50-50 for 2nd Test against New Zealand in Wellington

Sri Lankan cricket team’s spinner Rangana Herath is not hundred percent fit for the second test match against New Zealand in Wellington. Herath didn’t play first test as he was facing leg injury. Sri Lanka lost 1st match at Christchurch and missed the spinner’s role on that Hagley Oval wicket. Rangana is still 50-50 for the tomorrow’s match.

Rangana Herath needs to clear fitness test just before the match begins. Captain Mathews said, “He will have to have a fitness test tomorrow but we can’t make a decision until he has done that test.” Herath was the leading wicket taker in 2014 year in test cricket.

Kiwi team captain Brendan McCullum accepts that Herath is a good bowler and we are looking forward to see him bowl at Basin Reserve. It will be interesting to see how he bowls in New Zealand conditions.

McCullum said, “I don’t think we have played him in these conditions. He is a very, very good bowler. He’s a smart, no-frills cricketer who just keeps at you and very rarely gives you a bad ball. It will be interesting to see how he bowls in these conditions but they will be stronger for his inclusion in the team and that presents us with a different challenge.”

Sri Lanka is behind in two test matches series by 1-0. New Zealand beat SL successfully in the first test match by 8 wickets. Captain Angelo Mathews believes that team will make strong come back in the series and hopefully win the second test at Wellington beginning from 3rd January.

Mathews said, “We have got no choice rather than going out there and playing positive cricket.

Sri Lanka has always come back really hard after losing the first test.”

“If you lose 1-0 or 2-0 it doesn’t matter. We want to square the series up and we have to play aggressive cricket to do that. We have the confidence that we can come back and win. We still believe we can win this.”

Sri Lankan team batting line up was damaged by some serious fast bowling from Tim Southee and Boult. Hence Lankai batsmen are practicing with two pieced ball to get habitual with conditions and fast bowling.

“Two pieced (balls) swing more than the four-piece, so it was just to counter the swing bowling and make you feel better with what we expect (to face) from Southee and Boult. They have been really good in the last few years, they have been taking a lot of wickets with the new ball and the old ball as well”, Mathews added.
