India’s Tour of Zimbabwe 2015 Cancelled

Team India’s tour to Zimbabwe has been cancelled due to broadcast rights of the hosts according to reports. Board of Control for cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to cancel the tour due to broadcast issues with Ten Sports and also cited fatigue of cricketers. Team India had a long season since last November when they played West Indies at home. Indian skipper MS Dhoni also indicated the same reason at the press conference after the second ODI against Bangladesh stating some of the players needs rest.

India's Tour of Zimbabwe 2015 Cancelled.

Although the main reason for the cancellation of the tour is the issue between BCCI and Ten Sports owner, Subhash Chandra. Beside these, BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya has had issues with Subhash Chandra back in 2004 when Zee telefilms, owned by Subhash, emerged as highest bidder for the broadcast rights of matches played between 2004 to 2008. Subhash responded in setting up rebel cricket league, ICL.

The decision regarding the postpone of Zimbabwe tour also puts a question mark on the India-Pakistan series as well as Ten Sports is the broadcasting partner of PCB.

Team India was supposed to play 2 T20i’s and 3ODI’s in Zimbabwe starting July 10. The Zimbabwe Chairman, Mr Wilson Manase, and chief executive officer, Mr Wilfred Mukondiwa, quoted to discuss the issue once again with BCCI and if the issue is not fixed then the tour may be postponed to next year.

The discussion is known to be held in the annual conference of ICC, which is in Bridgetown, Barbados from 22nd to 26th June. ZC chief also added, “Cricket is the National Sport of Zimbabwe and ZC enjoys a cordial relationship with all cricketing boards. The substantive issues are what needed to be discussed in Barbados”. India will next tour to Sri Lanka for a series and SLC also patched up with Ten Sports for the Broadcast. Hopefully, the issues will be resolved soon.
