IPL: Five of the Best Centuries in competition’s history

The IPL has a propensity to bring the best out of batsmen who thrive in the pressure cooker atmosphere of T20 cricket, and they like to put on a show for the fans.

Some batters over the years have produced some spellbinding shots and they have taken away games from teams with their aggressive manner.

Indeed, centuries are being compiled more regularly in the IPL and with that in mind, we would like to reminisce on five of the best century makers in the competition’s history and discuss their defining moments.

Please note that the list is in no particular order and the statistics were correct at the time of writing.

Brendon McCullum (158* for Kolkata Knight Riders v Royal Challengers Bangalore, April 2008)

Brendon McCullum is one of those flair batsmen that will swat anything that is slightly outside off stump and when in full flow, he’s unstoppable. This proved to be the case against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008 when he smashed 158 runs off just 73 deliveries and it was an unbeaten knock.

There were 10 fours and 13 sixes in a truly incredible innings, and it was one of those performances which would have left you awestruck.

Chris Gayle (175* for Royal Challengers Bangalore v Pune Warriors, 2013)

Chris Gayle was known for his power hitting, but he also had some finesse, and there were times he would launch the ball over the bowler almost effortlessly.

Gayle to be crucial for West Indies in Quarter-final against NZ.

And the West Indies legend notched up the highest score to date in IPL history when he fired 175 runs off just 66 balls for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Pune Warriors.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore, however, could be a threat in this year’s edition of the IPL and they will certainly be ones to watch. Mike Hussey (116* for Chennai Super Kings v Punjab Kings, 2008)

Known as ‘Mr Cricket’, Mike Hussey was one of the best batsmen of his generation at T20 level and he loved the hustle and bustle of the IPL. Against the Punjab Kings, Hussey showed no mercy as he hit an unbeaten knock of 116 in just 65 deliveries and he left an indelible mark on the game.

Virender Sehwag (122 for Punjab Kings v Chennai Super Kings, 2014)

Virender Sehwag is rightfully an India great and he knew how to exploit weaknesses in any team. Against the Chennai Super Kings, Sehwag was explosive as he amassed 122 in 58 deliveries and it was an innings that included 12 sixes and 8 fours. He was a joy to watch at T20 level and this innings pays testament to that.
