NZ beat SL by 3 wickets in Christchurch ODI, Anderson named MOM

New Zealand rising star Corey Anderson all-rounding capabilities lead Kiwi team to beat Sri Lanka in the opening game of seven One-Day match series here at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Corey Anderson took one wicket in Sri Lankan inning and played 81 runs match winning inning for Blackcaps. NZ defeated SL by 3 wickets in first One-Day. By this performance New Zealand take 1-0 lead in 7 ODI matches series.

Before this Sri Lanka put 218 runs on the scoreboard in 50 overs after winning the toss. This total wasn’t big in terms of the format of game.

Mahela Jayawardene was the only highlight in Sri Lankan inning as he scored 18th ODI hundred for country. Jayawardene made 104 runs in 107 balls with 14 boundaries and one six. No other batsman could contribute to team’s total and whole Sri Lanka team managed to score just 218 runs after losing 9 wickets at the end of overs.

Mitchell McClenaghan took 4 wickets for New Zealand after conceding just 36 runs in first ODI played at Hagley Oval. Adam Milne out two Sri Lankan batsmen in the match and spent 37 runs in his bowling over quota of 10 overs. Nathan McCullum and Corey Anderson took 1-1 wickets each.

In the chase of 219 runs New Zealand early wicket in the very first over as Kulasekara took the wicket of Guptil on zero. After this McCullum and Williamson built partnership and took team’s total past 50 in 5.1 overs. Captain Brendon McCullum was in great touch and was playing a destructive match inning for Kiwis. But unfortunately he got dismissed after scoring 51 in 22 balls. He hit three sixes and 6 fours in his quick fire innings.

After this Sri Lanka bowlers put regular pressure on Kiwi batsmen and took wickets at the regular time interval. New Zealand was in deep trouble at one stage when team’s total was 101/5 in 19th over. Then Corey Anderson and Ronchi re-built NZ inning but after scoring 17 Luke Ronchi dismissed by Eranga. Nathan McCullum and Anderson played sensibly and took Kiwis on the winning way. Anderson completed his fifty in 64 balls. He got dismissed just before the winning runs.

Corey Anderson made 81 runs in 96 balls with 11 fours and one big six. McCullum and Milne confirmed New Zealand win in the first One-Day match against Sri Lanka. NZ won by 3 wickets and Corey Anderson was declared man of the match. The next match of series will be played on 15 January at Hamilton.
