Vietnam have faced Japan in international soccer match twice before quarterfinal meeting and on both occasions Vietnam ended up result losing the game. Last time these two sides met in an international friendly game in 2011 when Japan defeated Vietnam by 1-0 meanwhile the only occasion when two teams played each other in Asian Cup was in 2007 and that time Japan thrashed Vietnam by 4-1.
