AFC Asian Cup 17th edition is entered in the quarterfinal stage as first quarter-final of tournament is set to be played between Vietnam and Japan on 24th January 2019 at Al-Maktoum Stadium in Dubai, UAE. Vietnam-Japan knockout game is scheduled to kick off at 17:00 local time.

Vietnam have faced Japan in international soccer match twice before quarterfinal meeting and on both occasions Vietnam ended up result losing the game. Last time these two sides met in an international friendly game in 2011 when Japan defeated Vietnam by 1-0 meanwhile the only occasion when two teams played each other in Asian Cup was in 2007 and that time Japan thrashed Vietnam by 4-1.
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is set to make debut in the competition from quarterfinal stage and Vietnam will be using the technology for the first time. Japan are familiar with it as VAR introduced in 2018 FIFA World Cup as well and Japan reached round of 16 in Russia.
