CAF Qualification format for 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Confederation of African Football (CAF) have revealed the new format for the qualification of FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar. Eventually the format is not new and it is similar to used for 2014 world cup in Brazil but differs from the qualifiers format of 2018 Russia world cup.

The qualifying format for 2022 world cup suggests that there are three phases for African continent football teams to get Qatar ticket. A total of five teams from CAF will qualify for the final FIFA World Cup event in Qatar 2022.

Three phases of 2022 World Cup CAF Qualifiers

  1. Preliminary Round
  2. Group Stage
  3. Knockout Stage

1. Preliminary Round

In the first round of qualification, top 26 ranking teams according FIFA rankings, will not take part in this stage. Remaining 28 teams will be part of this preliminary round and top 14 teams according rankings from these 28, will play against lowest ranking sides and first leg matches will be held at the high ranking team’s home. 14 teams will through to group stage.

2. Group Stage

In the group stage of 2022 FIFA world cup qualifiers for African confederation, a total of 40 teams will compete in the second round of qualification. 14 teams come from the preliminary round meanwhile 26 teams are the sides that didn’t take part in first round and they are high ranked in FIFA rankings for the continent.

The participating 40 teams will be divided into 10 groups each containing four teams. Teams will be categorized into 4 levels and each group will contain teams from every level. Top ten teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stage of the world cup qualification.

3. Knockout Stage

This is the final stage of 2022 world cup qualification process for African region and 10 teams will be categorized into two groups each consists of 5 national teams. Top 5 teams according FIFA rankings will form one group meanwhile rest teams will go into another pool. First leg matches will be played at the lowest ranking teams home.
