Brazilian Football legend Pele will be joining his former club New York Cosmos for the upcoming exhibition match on 2nd June between Cosmos and Cuba’s National Soccer Team. Cuban officials confirmed the availability of Pele in this historic match on Tuesday.
“It is now confirmed: The king of soccer, Pele, is coming to Havana … for the upcoming friendly match on June 2,” the official newspaper Juventud Rebelde reported, citing Antonio Garces, vice president of the Cuban Football Association.
New York Cosmos are the second division of U.S. professional soccer club and will be playing first match of an American professional Sports team in Cuba since December.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento aka Pele joined Cosmos in 1970s when club signed him to participate in North American Soccer League. The league was folded in 1980s but it became alive again in 2009. Pele was announced Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee. He won three FIFA world cups for nations.
One World Sports and ESPN2 will be telecasting live football match between Cuba and NY Cosmos.
