Argentina striker Sergio Aguero has said he is desperate to win upcoming Copa America not for him but his team fellow Lionel Messi who is yet to win a major international football trophy for the country. Lionel Messi suffered heartbreak of losing 2014 world cup final, 2015 and 2016 Copa America finals. Hence Aguero is keen to win this year’s Copa America in Brazil.
“I’m more anxious to be a champion for Messi than for me. Hopefully one day it happens. It’s his dream and everyone’s dream. I put myself in his place and I want to try to do my best for him to lift the Copa America. It’s been a long time that he comes here and he suffers. I also suffer. We know what he can bring and the rest have to be mentally prepared not to fail,” Aguero said in an interview to Fox Sports.
Sergio Aguero wasn’t sure if he would be called in the national for 2019 Copa America but he’s included in the Argentine national side. The Manchester City forward knows that Copa America is a short tournament and every game is important. One bad game and you are out the competition. Hence he is eager to perform well and wants to win international tournament with legend Lionel Messi.
“When I wasn’t being called up I had doubts if I would be there or not. Leo called me in April to tell me I would be called. I was very happy, I don’t know if it will be the last tournament. We want to win something with the national team. We know there’s a lot of pressure on Argentina. The smallest mistake and you are eliminated because it’s a short tournament. You cannot afford to have a bad match,” he added.
The 46th edition of Copa America is starting from June 14 and Argentina to play their opening match of tournament against Colombia in Salvador. Argentina will face Paraguay and Qatar on 19 and 23 June.
