Colombia to host final of 2020 Copa America, Opening match in Argentina

South American football governing council CONMEBOL have confirmed the hosts of opening and final match of Copa America 2020. Argentina is set to host first game of next Copa America tournament on 12th June meanwhile final is scheduled to be held on July 12 at Colombia. Both countries were awarded rights to host the 47th edition of South America soccer championship.

“The 2020 Copa America will begin its new edition on June 12, 2020 in Argentina, and crown its new continental champions in Colombia,” CONMEBOL said in a statement.

The 12 teams tournament will be played under the new format where teams will be playing five games at the group stage. Currently teams use to play 3 matches in the initial stage of event. As per new format, teams are apart in Northern and Southern regions.

Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela are placed in the Northern category and play matches in Colombia. Meanwhile rest 5 CONMEBOL member nations Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay are due to play in the Argentina. Two guest teams Australia and Qatar will be allotted groups in near future.

Top four teams after group stage will enter into the quarter-finals. Argentina and Colombia to share 2 quarterfinals and 1 semi-final for 2020 Copa America.
