FIFA Boss Gianni Infantino: 48-team World Cup possible in Qatar

On the occasion of Asian Football Confederations new headquarter opening in Kuala Lumpur, FIFA boss insisted to increase football world cup teams number from 32 to 48 for Qatar.

However Federation Internationale de Football Association has already increased the no. of teams for sports’ biggest event that will take place in United States, Mexico and Canada in year 2026. Football’s biggest governing council head wants to take forward this implementation to 2022.

“We have decided… to increase the number of teams participating in the World Cup final tournaments from 32 to 48. It will happen in 2026. Will it happen in 2022? You know me. It is possible. It is possible. Why not?”, FIFA president said in AFC’s annual congress in Kuala Lumpur.

“You will have (a bigger) chance. It is possible. It is feasible. We are discussing with our Qatari friends. We are discussing with many other friends in the region. We hope we have it happen. We always have to try,” President Gianni Infantino said.

If 48 teams world cup gets green signal from Qatar and authorities, the maximum benefited region would be Asia. Currently as per world cup final qualification rules, 4.5 slots have been allotted for Asian football teams in 32-team tournament. And for 48-team world cup, 8.5 teams to get a chance to compete in world cup.

Final decision on number of teams for next world cup is expected to be revealed in January 2019.
